Studying Plumbing at EKC Ashford College gives you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to start a career in one of the most in-demand trades. Plumbers keep homes and businesses running by installing and fixing water, heating, gas, and waste systems.

A career in Plumbing offers job security, strong earning potential, and plenty of opportunities. Whether you want to work on building sites, in homes, or eventually run your own business. Plumbing provides a rewarding and practical career path.

Plumbing Apprentice

Salary: £10,000–£18,000 per year

After completing a Level 2 in Plumbing at College, many students move straight into an apprenticeship. As an apprentice you earn money while learning on the job and working alongside experienced plumbers. You build practical skills and gain experience in areas such as pipework, system installation, and fault finding.

During your apprenticeship, you complete an industry-recognised qualification, typically a Level 3 in Plumbing. Most apprenticeships last between two to four years and lead directly to full-time employment.

Qualified Plumber

Salary: £28,000–£40,000

Once you qualify you can take on a wide range of jobs. Install bathrooms and kitchens, fit boilers and heating systems, repair pipework and solve everyday plumbing problems. You will also follow UK regulations and make sure every job meets safety standards. Qualified plumbers work for plumbing companies, construction firms, or local councils. With experience you can take on more responsibility or move into specialist areas such as heating or gas.

Self-Employed Plumber

Salary: £40,000–£60,000 per year

Many plumbers choose to work for themselves after gaining experience. Working for yourself allows you to choose your jobs, set your prices and manage your own schedule. You will deal directly with customers and build your reputation through high quality work. To increase your income, you can train in gas and heating. Hardworking plumbers often secure repeat customers and grow successful businesses. Most self-employed plumbers hold NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications and several years of industry experience.

Gas and Heating Engineer

Salary: £30,000–£45,000 per year

Gas and heating engineers specialise in boilers, radiators, cookers, and central heating. Install new systems, repair faults, and keep homes and businesses safe and warm, whilst improving energy efficiency, helping customers to reduce their energy costs.

To work legally with gas in the UK, you must complete ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) gas training and assessment and join the Gas Safe Register.

Engineers with gas and heating skills remain in high demand across the UK. Most gas and heating engineers start with plumbing qualifications, complete an apprenticeship, gain experience, take ACS gas training, and then register with Gas Safe.
