Art and Design students from across the College have once again showcased their incredible work in a public exhibition at County Square Ashford.
The exhibition highlighted the range of talent across our creative courses, from detailed sculptures to thought-provoking paintings.
For many students, this was their first experience of exhibiting professionally, giving them the opportunity to present their work to the wider community while building confidence and developing new skills.
In this blog, we take a closer look at three of the student artists behind the exhibition, who shared their thoughts, inspiration, and reflections on the experience.
Kerlisse – ‘Confetti Constellations’
“I’ve stuck with the theme of chaos for one of my artworks ‘Confetti Constellations’, which is green, blue, pink, and orange. It’s so messy, which is why I love it.
“Another piece of mine is a painting with different skin tones, inspired by Beyoncé’s song ‘Brown Skin Girl’.
“I also have a cyanotype with pictures of me from different stages of my life, which means it’s got a more personal meaning.
“Taking part in this exhibition has been nerve-wracking, but being able to show off your pieces is nice.
“I want to be an interior designer, so I thought studying an art course was a good first step for that.
“It’s my second year here at College. I love oil painting and I’d like to experiment more with that next year.
“My advice for a new student in September is, don’t stress it, sometimes your art won’t come out exactly how you want it to be, but someone else will love it.”
Chloe – ‘Drowning in Silence’
“The meaning of my main piece, ‘Drowning in Silence’, is all about emotions and is meant to represent how some people struggle with their mental health.
“It’s nice that it’s in the exhibition, because sometimes it’s hard to get your artwork out there, but it’s great that College gives us this wonderful opportunity.
“I did art at GCSE and I liked that. I like being creative, so it made sense for me to carry it on further at College.
“Next year, I’m continuing on my Level 3 course, and I hope to create even more work that portrays important messages.
“This is only my first year, but I’ve done a lot so far in one subject, which is what I really want to do.”
Taylor – ‘Supra’ and ‘Porsches’
“Towards the end of the year, we get more freedom to do what we want to do, which I’ve really enjoyed.
“I actually have two car paintings in this year’s exhibition. One’s a Supra and one’s of two Porsches side-by-side. I enjoy the way they look and they’re nice to paint, so that’s what I focused on.
“Being in the exhibition has been good, as the general public can see what everyone’s doing, and you can see what everyone else is doing as well.
“It’s nice to have your work on display alongside others. Next year, I hope to develop more and see where my art takes me.
“Art is one of my hobbies and I enjoy doing it at College.”
Thank you to Kerlisse, Chloe, and Taylor for speaking about their artwork and their experiences so far.
Their insights highlight just some of the creativity, skill and personal expression that went into this year’s exhibition.
