In this blog, we shine a light on our Deputy Head of Professional Services, Helen. Supporting our Health, Care and Science as well as our Education and Early Years students, Helen is a passionate tutor who brings years of experience as a paediatric nurse into her lessons.
What is your professional background?
“I trained as a paediatric nurse, worked in hospitals and community health services, spent ten years as a health visitor, before moving into education.”
Why did you decide to become a lecturer?
“There was a restructure in the NHS, due to this I was searching for other roles I could apply my skills to. I saw the role as a Health and Social Care tutor with EKC Ashford College and thought I would give it a go. I knew I had lots of practical skills and experience I could share with the students, I thought it would be nice to give back. I have been here ever since!”
What achievements are you most proud of at the College?
“When I started here, we only had two Health and Social Care tutors, we now have five. This is something I am really proud of. Due to this expansion, we have been able to extend the range of courses available, which includes developing the College’s adult provision.
“My next goal is to strengthen social care education, address skills shortages in the sector, and introduce more training around digital and assistive technologies.”
What makes EKC Ashford College special?
“There is a strong sense of community here at EKC Ashford College. All departments collaborate well and strive for excellence. We work together to support our students to be the best they can be.”
What progression opportunities are available after completing a Health and Social Care course?
“There are various options for students once they complete a course with is. They can decide to move into employment, progress to higher-level health and social care courses, or continue towards university through an Access to Higher Education programme.”
How does the College support students beyond the classroom?
“All our students have access to learning skills coaches, mentors, the e-Hub, additional study support, and opportunities to attend extra sessions if needed. Tutors also provide one-to-one support when required.
“They also have access to careers advice, learning support services, wellbeing support, and guidance tailored to their individual goals.”
Is there one student you are particularly proud of?
“I am proud of all my students. They come from diverse backgrounds, support one another, overcome challenges, and work hard to achieve their goals. Their success and determination are what make my role rewarding.
“I was particularly proud of the perseverance of one student; she completed a Level 2 Health and Social Care course despite experiencing significant health challenges. With additional support from tutors, she has since progressed onto the Access to Higher Education course and is now working towards her goal of becoming a nurse. It was great to be part of her journey.”
Thank you to Helen for sharing her story. We are proud to have such passionate staff who consistently work hard to ensure each and every student achieves their goals.
