Brompton Bikes explore Robotics with College Engineering students

EKC Ashford College recently welcomed representatives from Brompton Bikes, offering our Engineering students the chance to showcase their skills.

EKC Ashford College recently welcomed representatives from Brompton Bikes, offering T Level and Level 2 Engineering students the chance to showcase their skills. Using the KR industrial Robotic controllers, designed to power the KR 4 AGILUS small robot, and the KUKA AGILUS located on site, they were able to demonstrate how the College is leading the way in robotics and machinery.

The visit highlighted how practical learning with new technologies and industry partnerships are preparing students for the future of Engineering.

Ted, who currently studies Engineering, was able to test out the KR 4 AGILUS robot to complete a range of tasks, including picking up cubes, drawing shapes with a pen and to trace a wire puzzle. He said: “This was the first time I have operated a robot as big as that! At first, it was a lot harder to use, but once I was shown how to do it, it became easier. For a career I want to go into, for manufacturing with motorsports, a lot of those machines are now core and key parts of it, so it’s great to get this experience now.”

Brompton’s Engineering Project Manager, Alexander Kimeer, explained: “As part of our project, we’d like to work together with East Kent Colleges Group to see how we can collaborate together. Whether it’s developing curriculum or supporting activities, it’s vital to find pathways that benefit students, the company, and the local area.”

Alexander was also impressed by the enthusiasm and skill of the students as they took it turns to use the KR industrial Robot Controller and get the robots to follow coded instructions, observing: “It’s amazing to see students get hands-on with KUKA machinery, and they are clearly passionate about the sector. It highlights why manufacturing companies should work with academics to develop new techniques, build engagement, and create excitement.”

For Level 2 students like Andrew, the event provided a chance to deepen their understanding of Robotics. He said: “It’s been exciting to work with the robots and I’ve been able to create and demonstrate how some pre-loaded scripts work (pre-written sets of instructions that are programmed into the robot) as well as learn how the robots operate in industry.” he said.

The day also allowed students to reflect on the practical applications of their learning. Ted credited his tutors, including Head of Engineering Gordon Paine, with providing vital support: “They make sure you understand what you’re doing, giving you full control before letting you use the machines. They guide you step-by-step to build your confidence.”

By offering opportunities like this and working with industry experts, EKC Ashford College ensures students gain valuable experience with new technologies and prepares them to thrive in their chosen career paths.
