Our annual Celebration of Culture Day took place at the end of Term 4. This is a celebration to highlight the strength of diversity and unity amongst our community and an opportunity to highlight our cultural backgrounds. The Celebration Day is filled with delicious food, captivating rhythms, and electrifying dances.
Celebrations Begins | 11am
Students and the local community joined us for our day for of celebrations as they arrived, they were by ‘Melodic Panman’ playing the steelpan, a musical instrument originating in Trinidad and Tobago. Students enjoyed the music and started lining up for Henna tattoos ahead of the activities.
African Drums | 11:30am
We were joined by Rich Rhythms who offer a West African Drumming experience. Students were given a djembe drum to learn and experiment with. Students and staff were enjoying this workshop which had people up and dancing throughout.
Latin Community | 12pm
Latina coach Carolina joined our celebration of culture day sharing the Bolivian culture. Teaching our students traditional dances throughout the day.
Lunch Time | 12:30pm
Food was delivered to our celebration day and served by our local businesses to help celebrate. Joined by Jay’s Soul Food to share their Caribbean and West Africana cuisines serving jollof rice and chicken, efor riro, pounded yam and BBQ chicken. Indians in Ashford served traditional vegetarian food such as Idli made with rice and daal flour, chutney with coconut spices and sambhar with daal and spices which is a popular meal in India. Il Pakkero served authentic Italian food such as pizza and tiramisu and Everest Inn Ashford served traditional Nepalese and Indian cuisine such as vegetable briyanic, naan bread and Vegetable Pakora.
Bollywood Dancing | 1:30pm
Students then joined in to learn Bollywood Dancing. Bollywood dance emerged during the rise of Indian cinema and is known for its expressive moves, lively gestures and colourful costumes and sets.
Haka | 2:00pm
Students then took part in learning the ‘Haka’ a Māori posture dance that involves vigorous rhythmic movements and fierce facial expressions. Students learnt a chant along with different movements such as swaying, stomping, and slapping the chest and thighs.
What a fantastic way to end the Term and a big congratulations to our Students’ Union team for putting together another fun and exciting day, giving our students the chance to celebrate the diverse cultures across our community.
