On Wednesday 17 September the College buzzed with activity as the annual Freshers’ Fayre kicked off the academic year; giving new and returning students the chance to explore everything college life, and the local community has to offer.
Grey skies and drizzle didn’t put a dampener on the day, as hundreds of students packed into the atrium to enjoy the fun activities and freebies.
The event was buzzing with exhibitors from across the local area including A Class Driving School and The Ashford Cinema who were giving students to opportunity to win free tickets to see a film of their choice. Students explored stalls offering advice and opportunities, while many got involved with interactive games, quizzes and competitions.

Many stalls, including One You Kent, Kran (Kent Refugee Action Network) and Get It, were offering advice and support to students about maintaining good mental health, sexual health and keeping healthy. Whilst local organisations such as Kent Youth County Council and the Volunteer Centre Ashford were on hand to share how students could get involved, doing their part to support the community.

Free henna art proved popular, as did the popcorn and sweets on offer. The day was topped off with a ice cream van that had long queues of eager students all day.
For many, the highlight was the sheer variety of stalls to discover. Level 2 Early Years student, Brendan said: “I’ve been round all of the stalls, there’s a lot of them! It’s good to be able to talk so many people.
“I’m a bit biased, but I think the Students’ Union stall is the best of the day. It’s great for students to see how much the SU has planned and what everyone can get involved in. It’s going to be an exciting year, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Organised by Megan, Student Experience Officer, the day proved a fantastic success with staff, students and exhibitors alike. Commenting on the importance of hosting such events, Megan said: “Our Fresher’s Fayre is always a wonderful and welcoming event, giving new and returning students the chance to explore the many opportunities, services, and support available to them, both within the college and throughout the local community. It’s a great way to start the year feeling informed, connected, and inspired.”
The Fayre also gave the College’s Student Union the chance to meet their peers and share their plans for the year ahead. Students were given the chance to sign up to an array of clubs as well as hear about exciting trips and activities, including the Freshers After Party that took place at Cameo later in the evening.

When speaking to Ster, this years Students’ Union President, he shared how excited he is to begin his term in post. Ster told us: “This year I really want to advocate for students, and ensure everyone’s voices are heard. Student voice is so important, I want College to be a place where everyone feels comfortable and happy all of the time.
“I’m really looking forward to the year ahead. We’ve got lots of exciting things planned for students, starting off with the Freshers After Party this evening at Cameo, which should be really fun. I’m looking forward to it, Cameo have a great DJ! I’m looking forward to getting to know all of the new students more over the coming weeks, and being a friendly, approachable face they know they can always talk to and share feedback.”

You can find Megan and Ster in the Student Hub, if you have any further questions or would like to get involved with the SU.
