Students from our Creative and Design courses have come together to display their artwork at the end of year show.
This year, the exhibition takes place at the Ashford Designer Outlet, giving students a central and professional space to display their art for the public. For one week only, unit 18 has been transformed to replicate a modern art gallery, with a bright open space and stark white walls to complement the artwork.
Students have already commented that this year’s venue has been a success, as footfall at the outlet far surpasses the stores students have historically exhibited from in the past. This has had a positive effect on participating students such as Holly Apps, who said: “It’s been really nice to see people appreciating our work. Art can be quite an insular thing so it’s lovely to get the opportunity to showcase our work here and get feedback from the wider public.”
The work displayed has been completed as part of the students’ final project. Art students were given the brief Order and Chaos, whilst the theme of photography students work was The Photographic Image. For some students, such as Rowan Cartlidge, they chose to focus on mediums and techniques they enjoy most. Rowan has enjoyed exploring pointillism with her uncle so it made sense for her to utilise the techniques she’s already learnt.
Some students decided the theme and subject of the piece was what inspired them. Olly Slater had already completed a project called ‘The Widow’ in the first year of her course, using images of her grandmother; so making the decision to develop a continuation of the project was an obvious choice. She enjoyed working with photography styles and colour to build a narrative throughout her photography portfolio. Whilst Belle Vasselin has enjoyed exploring product photography, so decided to delve deeper into this photography style, explaining: “I wanted to play around with colours, and look into different ways of presenting products to make images more eye-catching and exciting”.
Victoria Payne, Skills Practitioner for Fine Art and Fashion commented: “The show has come together really well. There’s a great variation of artwork and mediums on display this year, which helps to really showcase what we have to offer at EKC Ashford College. It speaks for itself, in that students can use any medium to produce the work they’re drawn towards. This show is essentially a celebration of their hard work and achievements.”
Artwork will be displayed at Unit 18 until 4pm on Friday 28 June.
