Meet your Student Experience Officer

30 October 2023
Ciaran spoke to us about the role of Student Experience Officer and what he loves about his job.

As our Student Experience Officer, Ciaran’s responsibility is to maintain a positive atmosphere, ensure students have a positive experience while at college and to provide a variety of enrichment opportunities.

Ciaran explains what he does in the role and why the student experience at EKC Ashford College is so great.

Student experience officer Ciaran

I work closely with the Students’ Union (SU) and the SU President in organising trips and events both inside and outside of College. I do my best to make sure they have all the support and help they need when implementing their ideas, running campaigns and organising activities.

We have so many events happening on campus, such as community week, where students take part in social action projects, freshers fayres, student awards and the end of year prom. We recently held our Celebration of Culture Day event, in which all our students came together to embrace the wide range of cultures we have at EKC Ashford College.

As part of our commitment to providing enrichment opportunities for students, we also run trips throughout the year. In the past these have included Thorpe Park and visiting Charlton Athletic’s home stadium, The Valley, to take part in the Valley Cup, which gives supporters the chance to compete in a 7-a-side tournament.

I also oversee the class reps. Class elected reps meet with me once a month to discuss and feedback any concerns their peers have, as well as any other ideas or changes they would like to see made around campus. I will then pass this information over to our Senior Leadership Team which will hopefully bring positive changes to the college.

College life isn’t just about your course, there is so much more on offer and I would definitely encourage all students to get involved with the Students’ Union and the many activities we have going on around campus. If you have any ideas for trips or events you would like to see us put on then you can send me an email to ciaran.barnes@ekcgroup.ac.uk or come and find me in my office on the ground floor.
