Meet your Students’ Union President at EKC Ashford College

23 September 2025
We spoke to this year’s Students’ Union President, Ster, about his role, what he hopes to do over the next year, and how the Students’ Union can benefit students.

When you join EKC Ashford College, you automatically become a member of the Students’ Union (SU).

The Students’ Union has many exciting clubs and societies for you to get involved in where you can meet new people and make new friends.

It is also there to represent your voice on issues that matter to you, and ensure you have a positive experience at College. You can help to make a difference to the College community by becoming a Class Rep or Students’ Union Officer and voting for your Students’ Union President.

The Students’ Union President helps to organise a range of trips and events both inside and outside of the College, such as Freshers’ Fayre, Celebration of Culture, and visits to Thorpe Park.

We spoke to this year’s Students’ Union President, Ster, about his role, what he hopes to do over the next year, and how the Students’ Union can benefit students.

Why did you run for Students’ Union President?

I ran for SU President because I felt like students’ voices can always be heard more. I’m passionate about building a College environment where every student feels included, heard and inspired to grow.

I also believe real change happens when we work together. I want to create a space where students can openly share their ideas, express their differences, and feel empowered to become who they truly want to be.

What are you excited about this year in your role?

I’m excited about having the opportunity to represent all students in the College. In particular, I want to represent those who aren’t confident or comfortable enough in those first few weeks to say how they feel.

There were four main points I mentioned in my election manifesto, and I want to action them all.

They are:

1. Improve communication between the Students’ Union and students

2. Organise events that celebrate student diversity and creativity

3. Push for enhanced facilities, mental health support and student resources

4. Make sure every voice is heard and not just the loudest

What would you like to do after College?

Once I’ve completed my Level 2 Business course, I’m probably going to do a T Level course, and then look into an Apprenticeship. After that, I’d like to go to university and study business further.

What do you like about College?

For me, I really like how different it feels to secondary school. There’s more freedom here and the uniform isn’t so strict which is nice.

I also only have to go into College for three days a week on my course, which gives me more time to do other things, such as this role.

The support from our Lecturers has been great this year and I’d personally like to thank my Lecturer Matt.

He’s given me a lot of help including when I took part in a recent competition, and he’s helped me with my presentation skills.

Could you sum up the College in three words?

I’d say College and the opportunities you get are fun, happy and exciting.
