Nelofar’s determination led from speaking little English to studying GCSE English

30 September 2025
Nelofar started her educational journey without any confidence speaking English, she is now studying GCSE English. Learn more about her journey at EKC Ashford College.

Nelofar started her educational journey with EKC Ashford College shortly after she arrived in the UK two years ago. When she first came into the College she only knew the basics of speaking English and now she is studying for her GCSE English qualification.

Her journey began when she signed up for an ESOL class. ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages, the course introduces learners to speaking and writing English as well as British values and adapting to life in the UK.

We caught up with Nelofar to learn more about her journey with us at EKC Ashford College.

From no confidence speaking English to completing an English qualification, Nelofar’s journey is truly inspirational.

How long have you been in the UK, and what courses have you studied so far?
I came to the UK over two years ago, and I’ve been studying English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). I started from ESOL Level 1, then ESOL Level 2, then Functional Skills Level 1 and Level 2, and now I’m doing English GCSE at EKC Ashford College.

Why did you choose to study the ESOL course?
When I first arrived in the UK, everything was different for me – the culture, people, and language. I wanted to find a way to improve my English. I had learned some basics back in my country, but I wanted to become confident at speaking and writing English.

When we first arrived, we were placed in a hotel near Ashford College. One day, I saw a notice about ESOL classes for asylum seekers – the only course I was allowed to study at that time. I went straight to the receptionist, who gave me the address of EKC Ashford College, and I came with my husband.

At that time, I couldn’t really speak English because I was afraid of making mistakes, but the ESOL teachers were very welcoming and supportive. That was the beginning of my journey in the UK.

What did you enjoy the most about your ESOL classes?
I enjoyed many things, especially the environment. It was welcoming, comfortable, and supportive. The teachers and classmates came from different countries, which was exciting.

Although I was nervous and under stress about my future, the staff created a place where we could learn without pressure or fear of mistakes. I enjoyed everything, but most of all, the supportive environment.

How has your English improved since starting ESOL?
I’ve seen a significant improvement. When I first came, I couldn’t speak because I lacked confidence. ESOL helped me rebuild that confidence.

It gave me the skills to progress to Functional Skills, and now to GCSE English. My teacher believes in me and encourages me. I can now write different types of texts, speak more comfortably, and express my ideas clearly. My writing and speaking are much better than before.

Would you recommend the ESOL course to others?
Yes, definitely. I recommend it, especially for people who are new to the UK. ESOL is not just about grammar and vocabulary – it also helps build confidence, teaches us about our rights, and how to live in this country.

I especially recommend EKC Ashford College, because I received so much support. I feel respected here, there’s a contemplation room where people can practice their religion.

Not only the teachers but also the staff, receptionists, and kitchen staff made me feel like I was among friends and family.

You’ve now moved on to GCSE English. Tell me a bit about that course.
GCSE English feels more serious than ESOL or Functional Skills. It makes me think critically and helps me express my ideas better.

The teachers are very energetic and supportive, even in the evenings after teaching all day. Joanna, my tutor, always gives me feedback on the many papers I bring her. It’s a very good course, and I love it.

What are your future plans after completing your GCSE English?
I am a qualified dentist in my country, and I want to get my dentistry licence in the UK. To do that, I need to pass the ORE exams, which include both practical and theory parts.

My final goal is to serve this country the same way I served my own. The government, College, and people here have supported me, and I feel I owe this country.

I’m proud that EKC Ashford College noticed my potential. That recognition means so much to me.
