In March, students from EKC Ashford College and EKC Dover College landed in Lebrija ready to embark on a unique adventure to complete a two-week work placement in Spain.

The trip was organised by Third Sector International a company who works with over 400 employers in Spain to plan vocational work placements.
The funding was made available by the Department of Education through the Turning Scheme.
Excited and enthusiastic, learners were ready for to utilise the skills they have learnt whilst in College as well as put their Spanish language knowledge to the test!

Speaking about the trip, T Level Electrical Installation student Cameron told us: “The employer I worked with was Todcons. They gave us responsibilities straight away, which was good. On day one we were given some tools and told to take down a wall.
“My work colleagues were really helpful, if you didn’t know what you were doing, they’d reassure you and explain. This was difficult at first because you had to get up Google Translate but after the first few days, they were great with it.”
For some students this was their first experience in Spain, meaning they not only learnt practical skills but also valuable life skills.
T Level Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing and Control Student Qrez added: “I hadn’t been to Spain before. I thought it was really nice, the weather was great, the people were also really cool.
“I worked with two employers on a building site. They didn’t speak much English, but with the help of Google Translate and hand actions, we figured out what we needed to do.
“Everyone I worked with was really friendly and helpful, which made it easy to work with them.”

The feedback received from all the employers was excellent, demonstrating the dedication and perseverance of our learners. Especially as they had to adapt to a brand-new working environment and navigate a language barrier.
One employer, Estructuras Cayser, commented on the work from three T Level Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing and Control Student students: “Thomas, Qrez and Charlie have developed many new skills and improved existing skills.
“They have had perfect attendance and punctuality, showing keenness to learn and have behaved in a highly professional manner.
“I would not hesitate to recommend these learners for a role in this sector.”

Despite a busy schedule working five days a week, the students made the most of their downtime by exploring the scenic surroundings of southern Spain.
On their days off, they visited historic towns such as Seville and Jerez, where they immersed themselves in local traditions, architecture, and cuisine.
To unwind, they took part in activities like kayaking and relaxing beach days, making the most of the beautiful Spanish coastline. Students also enjoyed a friendly football match with local residents and another College group on placement.

As well as the invaluable work experience, this fantastic opportunity also offered learners the chance to learn important life skills, such as budgeting and living independently.
Learners stayed in their own apartments and were given €70 a week for food. Some students chose to perfect their cookery skills whilst others decided to eat the local Spanish cuisine.
Reflecting on the trip, T Level Electrical Installation student Cameron said: “When we got there, we didn’t know any of the Dover students. We were put into groups to stay together in the apartments.
“A highlight of the trip for me was getting to know the Dover lot throughout the trip, they were really nice, genuine people. We still keep in touch with them which is nice.”
We are incredibly proud of our students for their professionalism, enthusiasm, and the way they represented the College throughout this international placement.
Their positive attitudes and excellent behaviour made the trip a great success, and we’re excited to offer similar opportunities to future learners.
If you’re passionate about electronics or engineering and want the chance to gain practical experience our T Level qualifications are the perfect fit.
Apply now to start this September and take the first step towards a career that could take you further than you imagined… perhaps even all the way to Spain!
