EKC Ashford College were crowned champions of the recent inter-college football tournament, after defeating Broadstairs 2–0 in a competitive final held at the Alcaline Stadium.
The one-day event brought together students from across our Group, with teams representing Ashford, Folkestone, Broadstairs, and Sheppey.
The tournament was delivered through the ongoing partnership with Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT). Michael Ward, Head of Football and Sports Development at CACT, praised the Student Experience Officer, Megan, for her organisation behind the scenes. He commented: “Megan has been brilliant and pivotal in bringing this all together. The students are having fun and the atmosphere is great.”
He added that the winning College would receive: “15 tickets to the Charlton Athletic v Middlesbrough game. So hopefully that’ll be a great experience for the winners to actually go and sample a championship football match on the back of their success today.”
Student Experience Officer, Megan Waller, highlighted the value of events like these and how they can help bring community’s together from across the region. She commented: “Our colleges are quite spread out, so it’s nice for students to meet others from different campuses.
“It’s really good at boosting that EKC spirit, and it’s really beneficial for their physical and mental health.”
Ashford’s players spoke proudly of their victory. Level 1 Employability student, Riley, said: “It felt good to win – it brings a lot of spirit to the team. Today has been fun, there wasn’t a dull moment.” He also praised their opponents: “Broadstairs stood out to me. They played well, I’m surprised they didn’t win it.”
Charlie, from Engineering, celebrated not only the win but the comeback from last year’s semi-final exit. He told us: “It felt amazing to win, honestly! A big old clean sheet from me.
“I think we’ve all enjoyed the day. It gets everyone together, we can all play as a team, make good friends and get in the spirit. There were a few good sides in there and a few good bits of football from everyone.”
The football tournament brought plenty of excitement to the Alcaline Stadium. There were close matches and strong performances throughout the day. We’d like to thank everyone who took part in a fantastic event, and to all students who helped to bring home the trophy.
