In this blog we catch up with Lilly, she is currently studying a Level 2 Plumbing with us. Lilly’s love for plumbing started when she completed a work placement with her dad while she was at school. She loved being able to learn in a practical way and could see a future in the plumbing world.
Lilly is determined to encourage other young women to give plumbing a go. Although it is a male dominated industry, anyone can be successful with the right mindset.
“If a man can do it, why can’t a woman do it? You’ve got to believe in yourself, take that step with confidence and pride.” Lilly commented.
Read on to find out more about Lilly’s time at College and her plans for the future.
Why did you choose plumbing at College?
“I feel like I’ve always been a hands-on person. The focus is to get the job done and to a high standard. Plumbing is all about solving problems. I really enjoy this part of it, as you’ve got to use your brain, remember what you’ve learned, and then put that knowledge into practice.”
How did plumbing become something you wanted to do as a career?
“It was because of my dad. He’s a plumber, running his own business. I did a work placement with my dad while I was at school, and that was my first experience of plumbing. After that, I decided it was something I could see a future and a career in.
“I find it easier to learn when I’m doing practical things rather than just sitting in a classroom listening. When I’m out with my dad, doing the job, I take the learning on board because I’m putting it straight into practice.
“Just remember who you are. If a man can do it, why can’t a woman do it? You’ve got to believe in yourself, take that step with confidence and pride.”
How was the transition from school to College?
“School wasn’t great. Coming to College felt like a fresh start. I was nervous because I knew I was probably going to be the only girl doing plumbing, but I thought I shouldn’t let that stop me from doing something I wanted to do.
“At school, you learn lots of things that aren’t necessarily what you want to learn about. At College, you feel more grown up because you’re learning something useful that you actually want to do in life.”
Would you recommend the College to other students?
“Yeah, definitely. It’s a nice environment. You still feel like a teenager, but you also feel more grown up because teachers trust you to do your work.
“Also at College, you choose to specialise in something you actually want to do, so you can focus on that instead of lots of different subjects. You can see the value in what you’re learning because it’s something you’re genuinely interested in.”
What are your plans after College?
“I haven’t completely decided what I’ll do next. If I leave College after my Level 2, I could go straight into a full-time apprenticeship with my dad. Alternatively, I might stay on to study a Level 3, or have the company support me to complete my gas qualifications elsewhere.
“My goal is to become a fully qualified Gas Safe plumber. Gaining those qualifications will open up more opportunities and allow me to take on larger projects in the industry.
“In the future, I’d love to work alongside my dad, continue growing the family business and, one day, take it over myself. That’s the long-term ambition I’m working towards.”
Lilly is a fantastic example of a student who will not let social norms hold her back. She is a dedicated student who thrives working and learning in a practical way. We look forward to seeing her progress and become a qualified plumber.
