Early Years students Moon and Emily bring to you their step-by-step guide, to show how to make a star chart using simple materials. It’s a perfect tool for you and your little one.

A reward/star chart is system to help you child achieve the desired behaviours, by rewarding the desired behaviours with a sticker. If they do the opposite of the task then you can possibly take away that sticker.

We’ve been learning about Piaget in class, who was a theorist that believed children learn best through repetition, so by completing the same tasks throughout the week they can get used to a routine.

For a star/reward chart you will need:

  • Paper/card
  • Stickers
  • An idea of a reward for the end of the week

Step 1 – creating a grid like shape with slots and achievements for your child to reach

Step 2 – when your child has completed a task let them put the sticker on their chart so they know that they have done something positive

Step 3 – reward where you think reward is due. You could give the big reward at the end of the week when they have achieved every task at least once or you could reward once they have hit a target of how many stickers they have

When making a star/reward chart it is better to have an idea of what your child is capable of and what will be within their abilities, such as:

  • Eating vegetables at dinner
  • Saying please and thank you
  • Asking to use the toilet
  • Putting dirty laundry in basket
  • Tidying up after themselves self such as by putting away their toys
  • Washing their hands
  • Trying new foods

By rewarding your child it offers them positive reinforcement. This encourages your child to then continue these behaviours.
