My HNC Experience – Toby Tang

28 January 2025
Toby Tang is studying the second year of the HNC in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at EKC Ashford College and speaks about his experience.

Toby Tang is studying the second year of the HNC in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at EKC Ashford College.

Currently working as a mechanic, Toby decided to pursue this opportunity to advance his knowledge of Engineering and Design.

We spoke to him in between lectures to hear about his experiences studying a University-level course at College.

What motivated you to study at University-level?

“I chose to study this course because my current job tends to look in depth at electronics. I wanted to further my understanding of how electrical systems and components work in real-time.

“I wanted to study somewhere where I could have a focused mindset and learn solely in this area, which is why the course is perfect.

“I want to be able to progress in the industry, so learning how to design components and understanding how Engineering principles work will give me the skills I need for my near future.”

How does studying at College compare to studying at a University?

“I’d say for me, studying at College has given me the chance to understand everything that I need to in one place.

“It’s also great to be able to have a lot of support from the College and the staff.

“Looking at Universities, I found that there wasn’t as much support, and there was a lot of learning by yourself.

“It’s been a privilege to be in this College and to have all the staff and my classmates help me out during the modules.”

What’s your favourite part of the course?

“I think my favourite thing about the course is that I’m learning a lot of maths in the context of Engineering.

“It’s funny as even though I did not like maths that much at School, learning it here has really opened my mind more and it’s been simpler to understand.

“During my classes over last year and this year, the process of learning maths has actually gotten easier and easier as time goes by.”

How has studying at College differed from your initial expectations?

“When I applied for the course, I had a feeling that everyone would be a bit younger as it was based in the College. However, most of my classmates are older than me and anyone who is 19+ can join the course.

“For me, it’s been valuable to see that everyone has come to the College for the same reasons that I have – to advance their mindset so they can get into the Engineering industry.

What interesting projects have you worked on during the course?

“One of my favourite projects last year was when we explored Engineering designs. We looked at common household objects that we could improve, such as a toothbrush or a toaster, and we had to implement a design where we could improve the sustainability of it.”

What advice would you give to a future student?

“If you want to learn more and gain knowledge then coming to College is a great idea. Everyone around you will be able to help you during your studies.

“This course has been a great experience to really understand how everything works.

“I’d say anyone is able to open up their mindset to advance their skills.”
