Returning to education as an adult can feel like a big step, but for many, it can also be the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
Across our College, adult learners are busy studying a wide range of subjects, from Maths and English, to Accounting, Barbering, Education and Early Years, and more! So, whether you’re looking to change careers, progress in your current role, or simply try something new, there’s a pathway to suit everyone.
We spoke to adult learners about their experiences, what brought them back into education, and where they hope their studies will take them.
Chunying | Level 3 AAT Accounting
Hoping to start a career as an Accountant, Chunying decided that returning to education was the right next step. She wanted to be a good role model to her children showing them that hard work pays off. And she did just that! Chunying thrived during the course and credits her tutor, Amin, for his help and support.
“College has not only improved my studies but also my mental and physical health. I’ve gained so much knowledge, confidence, and skills that I can carry into my future career. Don’t worry about starting to learn again, it’s absolutely worth it. Keep improving yourself, learn new skills, and never give up.”
Andrew | Level 3 Creative Media
Andrew returned to College after realising his previous career path was not the right fit for him. Choosing to study Level 3 Creative Media gave him the opportunity for a fresh start and the chance to pursue something he was truly passionate about.
During his second year, Andrew became Student Union President, a role that helped him grow in confidence and develop strong leadership skills. He is now heading off to university to expand his knowledge further and build a career that truly suits his interests.
“I’ve really enjoyed the course. My favourite part was that, even as a mature student, I had the opportunity to discover new skills and find something I am really good at. Being with like-minded people and being able to express yourself and for that to be accepted has been lifechanging for me.”
Sandra | Level 2 Barbering
After seeing how devastating it can be to lose your hair due to a health condition, Sandra decided to retrain as a hairdresser. Her long-term goal is to start a wig business, helping people who have lost their hair regain confidence and feel more like themselves. She has loved the adult hairdressing course and has now progressed onto a barbering course to further widen her skill set.
“I’ve learned absolutely loads. The theory builds your knowledge and really helps with consultations. I’m very confident and chatty with clients now, especially in barbering. I’ve learned different techniques and found what works best for me. It’s flexible and the tutors are really supportive.”
Toby | HNC Engineering
Toby returned to education while working full-time to upskill and progress in the engineering industry. In his role, he was working with complex electrical systems but wanted a deeper understanding of how they worked. His course has strengthened both his knowledge and confidence, helping him feel ready to progress in his career.
“When I applied for the course, I had a feeling that everyone would be a bit younger as it was based in the College. However, most of my classmates are older than me and anyone who is 19+ can join the course. It’s been valuable to see that everyone has come to the College for the same reasons that I have – to advance their mindset so they can get into the Engineering industry.”
Nelofar | GCSE English
When Nelofar first arrived in the UK, she did not feel confident speaking English. With the support of the College staff, she signed up to study an ESOL course. A step that not only improved her language skills but also gave her a sense of belonging.
The course helped her grow in confidence, understand her rights, and learn how to navigate life in the UK. Determined to keep progressing, Nelofar went on to study English Functional Skills before advancing to GCSE English.
“I enjoyed many things, especially the environment. It was welcoming, comfortable, and supportive. The teachers and classmates came from different countries, which I found exciting. Although I was nervous and under stress about my future, the staff created a place where we could learn without pressure or fear of mistakes. I enjoyed everything, but most of all, the supportive environment.”
Michelle | GCSE English
Wanting to be able to help her son with his studies, Michelle decided it was time to improve her writing skills. Despite her nerves, she decided to sign up the evening GCSE English class. Her initial worries soon washed away when she realised how supportive her tutors and classmates were.
“The College has been amazing, my tutors have really supported me, and I’ll miss them after two years together. My favourite thing has been the learning and having such great tutors. After attempting the exam a few times, I am just ecstatic to have passed. I couldn’t have done it without my tutor’s support.”
